UP schools offer rigorous academics, hands-on STEM education, and immersive career-connected opportunities in and outside the classroom, equipping students with the academic and emotional skills to set them apart from their peers and confidently navigate a wide variety of spaces.

Students in elementary and middle school math classes engage in a problem based curriculum that pushes them to make sense of challenging problems, build on previous knowledge and skills, and work and discuss with their classmates in order to build math meaning together.

Our science scholars engage in OpenSciEd, a curriculum where science learning revolves around figuring out an intriguing phenomenon. Teachers guide students to process deep science learning and students work together and learn from each other as they ask questions, design investigations, and find solutions to build and refine their ideas and understanding of the science behind the phenomena.

Students engage in programs that foster a love of reading while building knowledge and skills. Elementary students explore thematic modules grounded in the science of reading, while middle schoolers tackle diverse texts, honing analytical and independent reading and writing skills to prepare for high school and beyond.

Students engage in career-connected learning and STEM exposure through experiential Encore science classes, enrichment activities and programs like our Spark Day of STEM, Imagine Your Future field trip series and career mentorship partnerships with STEM industry experts.

SPARK
Spark is our annual day of STEM, hosted at one of our schools in Dorchester in the fall, where students across UP academies learn about STEM subjects and careers. We partner with organizations and companies in STEM fields to bring hands-on immersive STEM experiences to our students. Our goal is to spark joy, excitement and wonder for STEM learning and career pathways.

Gardening
We foster environmental and ecological awareness among students through experiential learning and seamless curriculum integration. Students grow native plants, fruits, and vegetables in our Peace Garden and greenhouse at UP Academy Dorchester.

Imagine Your Future
Through partnerships with Boston area companies, this exciting program helps increase sightlines to high-demand careers and provides our students with exposure that they may not otherwise experience. Boston area companies to host our students or join us on campus for a curated career pathways experience.

The mentorship program pairs middle school students with mentors from companies in high-demand industries, such as Bitsight in cybersecurity, providing valuable career insights, skill development, and networking opportunities to help students build confidence and explore future career paths.
